Now Lets Talk About The SCRA
The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) can provide major refund opportunities for active-duty service members by requiring lenders to cap interest rates at 6% on qualifying debts opened before active duty, including credit cards, auto loans, personal loans, and some mortgages. If a lender charged more than 6% during the protected period, they are generally required to forgive and refund the excess interest and certain fees, often resulting in meaningful refund checks.
For many service members, the refund side of SCRA is the most valuable benefit because it can apply retroactively back to the first day of active duty, meaning years of overpaid interest may be returned in a lump sum once accounts are properly reviewed and adjusted.

The exact refund amount depends on the account balances, original APRs, loan types, and length of service, which is why a full review of prior financial accounts can uncover thousands of dollars in overlooked refunds.
For mortgages, the 6% protection can continue one year after active duty ends, which can make those refunds even larger.
